Since online poker started in the late 1990’s the most popular forms of the game have changed dramatically. No-Limit Holdem came from obscurity to be the leading variation by a long way – while the fixed limit game continues to lose ground. Omaha Poker, in which players are dealt 4 cards has become increasingly popular over the last 2 years, though still has a long way to go to catch up with the no-limit Holdem structure.

Here are the most popular online poker games in order from the biggest down:

#1 – No Limit Texas Holdem

This game is not just number #1, it is first by a huge margin. As the name suggests the attraction of this game is that you can bet any amount at any point in the hand – up to the total chips you have on the table when the hand begins. 6-player games are especially popular in this format, with the smaller number of players ensuring fast action.

#2 – Pot Limit Omaha

Omaha is similar in structure to Texas Holdem, with a flop, turn and river betting round. In this form of poker each player is dealt 4 cards, and uses 2 from their own hand and 3 from the ‘board’ to make a poker hand with. Pot Limit betting means you can only bet up to the total of the current pot at any time, adding an interesting dynamic to the game.

#3 – Fixed Limit Texas Holdem

Once the most popular game of all, fixed limit betting is still a popular form of the game and can be found at all online sites. In this variation the amount you can bet, and the number of raises are both determined in advance.

#4 – Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8-Or Better

4TH In the list is the split-pot version of Omaha. This game divides the pot between the best high poker hand and the best ‘low poker hand’. Low hands must contain 5 different cards 8 or under and if none are made in a hand the whole pot goes to the player with the high hand. This game can seem complex to new players and is a fun and high action variation which continues to grow in popularity.

#5 – 7 Card Stud

7 Card Stud is different to the 4 types of poker listed above. In this game there are no community (shared) cards, each player has their own ‘board’. This consists of 7 cards, 4 of which are visible to the other players. The best 5 cards make your poker hand at showdown. Strategy in stud poker involves remembering which cards have been folded as well as reading your opponent’s play.
